At the stroke of midnight

I welcomed 2016 with a rainy bang. There was a light drizzle all evening long but your son and I still lit some sparklers as we ushered in the new year without you by our sides.

You were thousands of miles away but when the clock struck twelve all I could think about were the endless possibilities this year would bring us. I optimistically thought of the future and wished nothing more than to have your arms wrapped around me. But I know that we all have to make sacrifices.

I can’t ask for anything more than for you to come home safe and sound. All I wish and pray for is that we can finally spend the rest of our lives together.

No more living apart. No more working in another country. Come home to me. Come home to your family.

I wrote this little piece for all the Overseas Filipino Workers who had to spend the holidays away from their families. I am proud of every single one of you. Along with your family, I am awaiting your return to our beloved country. Mabuhay ka kababayan!

To keep it short and simple: I'm twenty-seven years old. Still plenty young, but not as young as I used to be.
