Minimalism and Me: An Introduction

I first chanced upon minimalism back in college when I was looking for themes for my then blog. I thought it was only about the color white, minimal to no ads and black and white photography. Never did I know that minimalism was more than that.

Fast forward a decade after, I got to read the blog Zen Habits and I was introduced to a whole new world. I guess it’s important to note that the blog Zen Habits doesn’t really talk about minimalism but it does scratch the surface. Anyway, it was just through that blog that I was introduced to minimalism as a lifestyle. (ps. I was reading this post)

Minimalism is a tool that can assist you in finding freedom. Freedom from fear. Freedom from worry. Freedom from overwhelm. Freedom from guilt. Freedom from depression. Freedom from the trappings of the consumer culture we’ve built our lives around. Real freedom. –The Minimalists

To tell you the truth, minimalism scares the living shit out of me. Imagine living with only your essentials and depending fully on non material things to enjoy life. The whole concept is overwhelming and honestly, for me, to ideal. So, I don’t think I can truly call myself a minimalist nor can I fully commit to being one right now! But it does intrigue me and I want to be one in my own way! If you need more reasons…

Here are my personal reasons why I want to try and be a minimalist:

  1. Clutter – The clutter that I have accumulated over the years is driving me off the wall. I have tons of knick knacks all over my room which only take up more space.
  2. Less is more – Even if this idea sounds crazy, it does make sense. If you have less material things, you can start focusing on things that really matter in your life like family and other interpersonal relationships.
  3. Financial freedom – Consumerism is a very big problem we are facing in the modern world. Everyone is forcing us to buy things we don’t need.
  4. Live life – When you only have your essentials in your life, you can start to look at things in a different perspective. You get to see what you really want out of your life.
  5. Simplicity – Minimalism brings about simplicity that is beyond compare. Everything becomes black and white. You begin to look at material things like material things again – you don’t give it too much meaning and only look at it as something to add color to your life and not your life.

I hope these simple reasons make you curious about minimalism and make you want to try it out for yourselves!

  1. Enjoyed this honest assessment. I have not looked into the minimalist lifestyle very much but after reading I feel like I want to know more.
