Review: The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo

I decided to read this book to encourage and fuel me further into this minimalism phase I am currently going through. If you haven’t read or heard of this book before, it’s all about tidying. It follows the KonMari Method which, if I had to summarize is all about asking yourself this simple question for every material thing you have – “Does it spark joy?

To be completely and brutally honest, Marie Kondo is a little too crazy for tidying if you ask me. She does, however, give valid points throughout her book which obviously proves why she is the best in the business.

First the good parts, I liked that this book is well-structured. It clearly follows a path that is designed to help you in your quest for tidying. There are tips all throughout the book that will help you in the process while the most important phrases (or phrases that Kondo believes are essential for your success) are already highlighted out for you.

On the flip side, there are some things that are written on the book that’s just too much for me. For instance, Kondo often suggests that you talk to your possessions either to thank it or bid it farewell. You also have to say your greetings upon entering your home. Things like these made me wince but ultimately Kondo writing this just shows how much respect she has for things that she doesn’t take any of it for granted. I, on the other hand, won’t be talking to inanimate objects anytime soon.

This book is a great read if you’re trying to tidy up. I will warn you though that you shouldn’t take everything she mentions down to the T. Sure, she might be an expert but as we all know, everyone goes through things differently. While reading this, you must have an open mind and look at this book as a guide or inspiration for what you really want to achieve in your life and in your space. You should enjoy the process and find what works best with you.

Have you read this book? I’d love to know what your thoughts are about it!

  1. It’s my current read and I am almost done with it and I got to say, I really liked it. Though I agree with you, as much as I love it, I wouldn’t be talking to my things anytime soon. 😸 I’m still thinking if I’ll write a post about this book. ✌

  2. It’s a great book! I keep reading sections of it over again sometimes because I tend to fall out of my tidying routine, which is a lot. 😛 I also bought her other one, Spark Joy.
